After years of uncertainty over the credibility of the University of Fort Hare’s speech and language therapy qualification, a group of 13 students finally graduated from the programme on Wednesday – effectively silencing all doubt over the credibility of the degree.
The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) previously said it was dissatisfied with how the programme was structured by the university, causing a delay in the graduation of students who enrolled in the four-year degree in 2018.
The HPCSA’s speech, language and hearing board expressed concerns over the programme’s staffing, curriculum, assessments, resources, clinical education, quality assurance and other factors.
