A train driver with many years of experience faces financial ruin after the Vereeniging train station closed its doors to commuters at the beginning of the month.

The man, who asked not to be named because he did not have permission to speak to the media, said the 102-year-old station closed on 2 April, without warning from the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa).

He added that the station’s closure would affect residents and businesses which relied on staff living along the 100km route.
