News24 | Saturday’s weather: Potential gale force winds forecast along Western Cape’s south-west coast

The South African Weather Service has issued multiple warnings, including the potential of strong winds that may reach gale force over the south-west coast of the Western Cape.

Impact-based warnings

A Yellow Level 2 warning has been issued for severe thunderstorms with possible heavy downpours leading to localised flooding, hail and strong damaging winds that could result in the damage and flooding of informal settlements and susceptible areas over the western parts of the Free State, eastern Northern Cape and extreme south-western parts of the North West.

A Yellow Level 1 warning has been issued for damaging winds leading to difficulty in navigation at sea between Table Bay and Plettenberg Bay.

Fire danger warnings

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the central interior of the Northern Cape and Matzikama Municipality in the Western Cape.

Gauteng will be cloudy and cool with isolated showers and thundershowers.

The expected UVB sunburn index is low.

Morning fog patches and drizzle are expected along the escarpment of Mpumalanga and Limpopo.

Otherwise, cloudy, and cool to cold conditions are forecast with isolated showers and thundershowers in the south-west, except on the Lowveld where it will be warm.

It will become partly cloudy in places from the afternoon.

The North West can expect partly cloudy and warm temperatures, with isolated showers and thundershowers, but scattered in the extreme south-west.

Cloudy conditions are forecast with morning fog patches in the eastern parts of the Free State.

Otherwise, it will be partly cloudy and cool to warm, with isolated showers and thundershowers, but scattered in the west.

The Northern Cape will be cloudy with morning fog along the extreme northern coast, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm temperatures are expected but it will be hot in the north.

Isolated showers and thundershowers are expected over the central parts but scattered in the east.

The wind along the coast will be a light to moderate southerly to south-easterly, becoming fresh from the afternoon.

Partly cloudy and warm to hot conditions are forecast for the west of the Western Cape.

Otherwise, it will be cloudy and warm with isolated showers and thundershowers along the south-east coast and the adjacent interior.

The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong along the south coast, otherwise it will be moderate to fresh east to south-easterly, but strong to gale force along the south-west coast.

It will be become a moderate northerly in the west from the evening.

The expected UVB sunburn index is high.

The western half of the Eastern Cape will be partly cloudy and cool with isolated showers and thundershowers in the north from the evening.

Otherwise, fine, and warm conditions are expected in places.

The wind along the coast will be a moderate to fresh north-easterly, reaching strong in places from the afternoon.

Cloudy conditions with light rain and fog are forecast south of the escarpment in the eastern half of the province in the morning.

Otherwise, it will be partly cloudy and cold to cool with isolated showers and thundershowers in the north-west from late afternoon.

The wind along the coast will be a light to moderate south-easterly, becoming moderate to fresh north-easterly in the afternoon.

KwaZulu-Natal can expect morning fog over the south-western interior.

Otherwise, it will be cloudy and cool with isolated showers and rain but scattered along the coast and adjacent interior.

It will be warm along the north coast.

The wind along the coast will be a light to moderate south-easterly in the south, becoming north-easterly.

Otherwise, a moderate to fresh southerly is expected except in places north of Cape St Lucia where it will be strong.
