Education lobby group, Equal Education (EE), has taken the Western Cape education department to court over unplaced pupils in the province.

EE, the Equal Education Law Centre (EELC) and five parents launched an urgent court application in the Western Cape High Court against the provincial government and the Department of Basic Education for the immediate placement of unplaced pupils in schools in the Metro East Education District.

In a statement, the group said pupil placement was a long-standing, systemic issue which the department had failed to adequately plan for.
