This is NOT what Kaizer Chiefs fans’ ancestors had in mind

Kaizer Chiefs can forget CAF Champions League qualification and silverware for another season, but it doesn’t stop there for their disgruntled fans.

MTN8 qualification will go down to the wire

A finish inside this season’s top eight is now the best Amakhosi can play for. Their upcoming clash with AmaZulu could be pivotal. Usuthu can leapfrog Chiefs with a win on Sunday 12 May at 17:30. The Glamour Boys will continue with Bruce Bvuma in goal after unused substitute Brandon Petersen was given a red card for something he said in the 2-2 draw with TS Galaxy. Meanwhile, Edmilson Dove also saw red in that match and Given Msimango must sit out this clash too after he was dismissed in the 1-5 defeat to Sundowns.

THE RACE FOR MTN8

Amakhosi have three matches left of the DStv Premiership campaign. Only two points separate them in eighth place (34) and AmaZulu in twelfth (32) so it’ll be an almighty scrap to finish inside the top eight. Polokwane City, Golden Arrows and Chippa are all in the thick of the race too but only one of these five sides will secure a place in next season’s MTN8. Chiefs can keep their fate in their own hands by beating AmaZulu and Polokwane and then strugglers Cape Town Spurs on the final day. However, we all know football isn’t that simple.

  • Sun 12 May vs AmaZulu (A) – 17:30
  • Sat 18 May vs Polokwane (H) – 15:00
  • Sat 25 May vs Cape Town Spurs (A) – 15:00

How did we get here?

Nine years ago, Chiefs were champions of South Africa. That squad was bristling with attacking talent and defensive solidity. Fast forward less than a decade and they’re limping over the line and slipping into midtable obscurity. It’s a stark fall from grace which neither the board nor the fans should tolerate next season.

Will Chiefs finish in the top eight or will they fall at the final hurdle in 2024?
