‘This is fraud!’: Cotton On under fire for R199 enamel mug

Retailer Cotton On is facing backlash on social media after advertising enamel cups for R199 each. Many social media users are calling the company out over the fact that the very same mugs can be bought for as little as R10 at a number of other retailers around South Africa.

Tweeps have now accused the company of trying to “scam” shoppers. Others have however defended the store and said that those who think the price is too high should simply shop elsewhere.

Cotton On slammed over R199 enamel mugs

Retail giant Cotton On is facing the full wrath of social media users after debuting their enamel cups for a whopping R199 per cup.

Enamel cups — which are also known as lebekere in Sesotho — usually go sell pretty cheap and are popular among many black cultures in South Africa.

Cotton On offers buyers the mugs in pink, green and and blue. They also have matching bowls and plates which cost R399 a set.

The price of the enamel crockery have sent Twitter users into a frenzy as they discuss what they believe is a big rip off on Cotton On’s behalf.

“We’re being mugged in broad daylight. Quite frankly, this is not my cup of tea,” one users wrote while another said:

“Price control must take effect…. This is fraud!”

Where else to find it

The cups can be found at West Pack for R10.90 or at Shoprite for R9.99 each.

If you’re looking for a set, News24 reports that they can be found at Osbro and are selling at R85 for a pack of 12 cups.

The publication also reports that they are made of cast steel or iron and then dipped in liquid enamel under scorching heat which gives the cup a rust preventing glaze and a glossy finish.
