A high-density police operation known as Operation Shanela has resulted in the arrests of more than 600 000 people in the past 12 months.

However, there is no word from police on how many of these suspects were charged with crimes, put on trial and subsequently convicted or acquitted.

Police Minister Bheki Cele and South African Police Service (SAPS) management held a “special seating of their weekly Operation Shanela” meeting, which was open to the media and crime analysts.
