A police officer arrested for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend, opened counter-assault and property damage charges, prompting her arrest on Tuesday.

KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the 39-year-old sergeant, who is stationed at the Hammarsdale police station, was arrested on Tuesday for the alleged assault of his 29-year-old girlfriend on Sunday night.

Netshiunda said allegations that the station initially refused to open a case launched by the alleged victim were under investigation.
