Israeli military leaders on Monday issued two statements promising that there would be a response to Iran’s weekend attack – without providing any hint as the nature or scale of retaliation being discussed.

Military spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said the country would “do whatever is necessary to protect the State of Israel, and we will do it at the opportunity and the time we will choose”.

The Israeli army issued a statement to record what it said had been remarks by army head General Herzi Halevi to troops at the Nevatim military base, which was one of Iran’s targets.
