Questioning the safety of the M1 South in Newtown, Johannesburg’s main thoroughfare between the southern and northern suburbs, Transport MMC Kenny Kunene said: “I am afraid to drive there. I can’t lie.”

In an interview with News24, Kunene spoke about the safety of that section of the highway, which thousands of motorists use every day.

On Saturday, the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) announced the closure of sections of Smit Street, a major arterial running through Braamfontein and the city centre after a fire on the M1 bridge on Wednesday morning.
