Thirty years after South Africa’s first democratic elections, challenges persist for the youth in Sarepta, Kuils River, which is about 30 minutes outside the Cape Town CBD. Demotivated youth are struggling more than ever to find employment while many are trapped in a vicious cycle of drugs and crime. News24 reporter Marvin Charles travelled back to his hometown to see what has changed.

I am a born-free South African. I did not know the hardships people endured during apartheid but while growing up, I could see the resulting inequalities in our society.

I am from Sarepta in Kuils River, located 30 minutes outside the Cape Town CBD, which is a conservative and quaint suburb where demotivated and unemployed young people do not seem to be interested in the upcoming general elections.
