Israel’s closely-guarded strategy to oppose South Africa’s claim of genocide at the International Court of Justice surprised Phillip de Wet, and is worrying supporters of Palestine.

For Israel, what the International Court of Justice (ICJ) says is ultimately of more political than legal consequence. Israel can ignore an order to pull its troops out of Gaza, but it cannot ignore public perception at home or in its key funder, the USA.

Yet, on Friday, Israel fought South Africa with far more technical legal arguments than politically-charged soundbites.
