While the cause of the underground fire that broke out along the M1 in Johannesburg has not yet been determined, tools typically used to steal electricity cables were recovered at the site.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said in a statement on Wednesday evening that significant progress had been made in fighting the fire in the underground tunnels along the M1 near Smit Street and the double-decker section.

“The team is now working on clearing the smoke in the area,” Mangena said.
