As the sun sets on the rooftop solar PV tax incentive for households, the government has announced plans to incentivise electric vehicle production in the country from 2026 onwards, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana said on Wednesday.

At last year’s budget, government introduced a 25% tax break for households to install rooftop solar PV, in a bid to help reduce load shedding. But as expected, the incentive has not been renewed.

Treasury’s acting deputy director-general for tax and financial sector policy, Chris Axelson, said ahead of the tabling of the National Budget the incentive was always meant to be implemented for one year only.
