Kaizer Chiefs? Orlando Pirates? What’s next for Bongani Zungu?

In a bizarre turn of events, Bongani Zungu took to social media to announce his Mamelodi Sundowns departure.

Zungu had just featured from the start for Sundowns against Orlando Pirates in the Nedbank Cup final

That proved to be the last game for Zungu in Sundowns colours, however. For some local football fans, it will also be remembered as the occasion he was skinned by Relebohile Mofokeng. To make matters worse, it was the action directly ahead of the finish from the teenager, that gave Pirates a 2-1 come from behind win.

Zungu announces Sundowns departure

Zungu joined Sundowns two seasons ago but had to go through an extensive fitness regime before finally making his debut. The delay probably took its toll, as he was never a regular in the midfield, by the time he was deemed fully fit. When he did play, however, he was often used in a centre-back-midfield hybrid role.

Interestingly enough, Zungu took to his official Instagram account to announce his departure from Sundowns. In a stranger turn of events, the club has not put out any statements. He wrote:

“I would like to thank Mamelodi Sundowns fans, technical team and the President for the last two seasons. The relationship I have with the club is beyond the professional space, sundowns will always be family to me and the entire Zungu family. I will always be grateful for every opportunity I was offered, so I say this with a heavy heart that I will be leaving the club. Thank you to all the amazing supporters who have been amazing to me throughout, I will always be grateful. I wish the team all the best, I know bigger success awaits you. I can’t say this enough, Thank You KBY.” Wrote Zungu.

Chiefs or Pirates the next destination?

Before joining Sundowns for his second stint, Zungu was heavily linked to Kaizer Chiefs. On the other hand, Pirates have not struggled to get free agents from Sundowns in the recent past. The likes of Kermit Erasmus and Lesedi Kapinga.

As it stands, it is unclear whether either Chiefs or Pirates would see Zungu as a viable option. His lack of game time and his high salary plus his age could deter both Soweto Giants. Amakhosi and Buccaneers, would you take the lanky midfielder at your clubs?
