How Sundowns can secure the title BEFORE playing Kaizer Chiefs

Mamelodi Sundowns are on the brink of a seventh consecutive DStv Premiership crown. They might even clinch it before rubbing it in Kaizer Chiefs fans’ faces.

Sundowns are almost there

After their routine 3-0 win over TS Galaxy on Monday, Rulani Mokwena’s team are within touching distance of the title. They’ve ruled the roost in South Africa, winning six titles on the bounce and seven of the last eight. Although this one has felt like a formality for some time, it will ease some of the pain suffered by Downs fans after their CAF Champions League exit to Esperance in the semi-finals. Three points against Chiefs will mathematically secure the title. However, Sundowns could have the title wrapped up by Wednesday, without kicking a ball, if Stellenbosch loses to Golden Arrows. A draw for Stellies against Arrows would virtually guarantee the title for Sundowns too, because of their vastly superior goal difference. Downs have a GD of +34 while Stellies have a GD of +16. A draw against Arrows would leave Stellenbosch needing massive wins in their final four matches and Sundowns to take heavy defeats in their remaining fixtures. There are seven if you include Thursday’s date with Chiefs. A Stellenbosch win will certainly be celebrated by Chiefs, who would rather not roll out the red carpet for Rulani’s team.

Chiefs can temporarily spoil the party

A 2-1 win against SuperSport has reignited Amakhosi’s hopes of a top-eight finish and qualification for next season’s MTN8. They’ll be without Mozambican defender Edmilson Dove against Sundowns, however. He’s suspended after his fourth booking of the campaign, against SuperSport. That leaves Cavin Johnson’s options in the centre of defence a little thin, with the returning Thatayaone Ditlhokwe still not match-fit and Njabulo Ngcobo out injured. Zitha Kwinika should deputise for Dove. Amakhosi host Sundowns on Thursday 2 May with kickoff at 19:30. A win here would not only delay Sundowns’ coronation for another week it would also breathe new life into Chiefs’ campaign which has been underwhelming.

When will Amakhosi taste the winning feeling again?
