GB’s Bankes claims second consecutive World Cup win

Great Britain’s Charlotte Bankes clinched a second consecutive victory of the Snowboard Cross World Cup season with gold in Sierra Nevada, Spain.

The 2022 and 2023 overall champion had struggled for form earlier this season.

But Bankes, 28, followed up February’s first win of the campaign in Georgia by beating Czech Republic’s Eva Adamczykova in second, while France’s Chloe Trespeuch was third.

It was the 2021 world champion’s 17th individual World Cup win of her career.

She was in imperious form, clocking the fourth fastest qualifying time on Friday before winning her quarter-final and semi-final races on Saturday.

Bankes then timed her charge perfectly in the final to keep a high-class field at bay.

“Great to get the win today going into this big block of racing ahead,” said Bankes.

“Today was tough conditions, but great team effort with fast board and great game plan that I was able to finish off.”

Back-to-back wins have left Bankes fifth in the overall standings, external on 267 points, 173 behind leader Trespeuch with three events remaining.

She is back in action on Sunday with a second race of the weekend in the Spanish resort.
