Bafana: The mastermind behind the Junior Springboks’ defence

The Junior Springboks faced a tough challenge in their Under-20 Rugby Championship opener against New Zealand U20, playing out a thrilling 13-13 draw at the Sunshine Coast Stadium in Bokarina, Queensland.

The match was played in extremely difficult conditions, with heavy rain creating puddles on the pitch and swirling winds complicating matters further.

Bafana Nhleko Praises Team’s Effort and Defence

Junior Springbok coach Bafana Nhleko expressed his satisfaction with his team’s effort and the valuable lessons learned from the match. “I am very proud of the efforts today [Thursday], especially in a very difficult first half,” said Nhleko. “It was a great opportunity to gain experience in different conditions and learn going forward.”

Despite struggling at the breakdowns and being pinned back in their own half for most of the first period, the Junior Springboks showcased exceptional defence.

Nhleko praised his team’s defensive system and the players’ attitude and effort, which prevented New Zealand from capitalising on their dominance.

Junior Springboks Show Potential with Ball in Hand

Although the Junior Springboks had limited attacking opportunities, Nhleko believes his team can be a threat with the ball in hand. “We can be a threat with ball in hand, which I hope we can show in the next match,” he said.

However, he acknowledged that they need to improve their ball retention on the ground and be more clinical when opportunities arise.

Areas for Improvement Ahead of Australia Clash

Looking ahead to their next match against Australia, Nhleko identified several areas for improvement. The Junior Springboks need to sharpen their kicking game, decision-making on the front foot, and management of the backfield.

“We will learn and grow from this experience because Australia will present a very different challenge,” said Nhleko.

The Junior Springbok coach also highlighted the need for his team to be more clinical in attack and take advantage of scoring opportunities when they present themselves.

Nhleko believes that with the right adjustments and a focused approach, the Junior Springoks can deliver a strong performance against Australia.

Argentina Top the Log After Opening Round

In the other match of the opening round, Argentina secured a convincing 25-6 victory over Australia, putting them at the top of the log. The Junior Springboks will need to regroup and prepare for their upcoming clash against the host nation on Tuesday.

Nhleko remains optimistic about his team’s prospects, stating, “Now, we must recharge and go again, with intent, on Tuesday when we play against Australia.”

The Junior Springboks will look to build on the positives from their opening match and address the areas that need improvement as they continue their campaign in the Under-20 Rugby Championship.
